A Different Approach to Route Directions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Current wayfinding assistance systems calculate primarily two kinds of routes: the shortest or the fastest. To overcome this limitation, recent research extends options in route choice. All approaches, however, provide the same kind of information independent of the route at hand, i.e. all route directions are created the same way irrespective of the route's characteristics. In contrast, we will frame a model that allows for assigning route directions according to route characteristics by developing a systematics for a formal treatment and the automatic generation of route-specific route directions. In our analysis, we concentrate on decision point / action pairs; the systematics considers the structure of an environment and its elements that can be used in giving route directions. We introduce the definition of superordinate route structures and sketch the optimization process used to create route-specific route directions.

A Uniform Handling of Different Landmark Types in Route Directions
Landmarks are crucial for human wayfinding. Their integration in wayfinding assistance systems is essential for generating cognitively ergonomic route directions. I present an approach to automatically determining references to different types of landmarks. This approach exploits the circular order of a decision point’s branches. It allows uniformly handling point landmarks as well as linear an...
متن کاملA Data-driven Approach to Understanding Spoken Route Directions in Human-Robot Dialogue
In this paper, we present a data-driven chunking parser for automatic interpretation of spoken route directions into a route graph that is useful for robot navigation. Different sets of features and machine learning algorithms are explored. The results indicate that our approach is robust to speech recognition errors.

متن کاملStructural Salience of Landmarks for Route Directions
This paper complements landmark research with an approach to formalize the structural salience of objects along routes. The aim is to automatically integrate salient objects—landmarks—into route directions. To this end, two directions of research are combined: the formalization of salience of objects and the conceptualization of wayfinding actions. We approach structural salience with some taxo...
متن کاملCreating an Annotated Corpus for Generating Walking Directions
This work describes first steps towards building a system that synchronously generates multimodal (textual and visual) route directions for pedestrians. We pursue a corpus-based approach for building a generation model that produces natural instructions in multiple languages. We conducted an empirical study to collect verbal route directions, and annotated the acquired texts on different levels...
